2008 Prize Winners

The second annual Manchester Student Prize ceremony took place on 9th July 2008 at Manchester University.

This year it had been decided to split the prize into two streams - one for people reading maths or statistics and another for the rest. The standard of the work of all entrants was very commendable and the winners in particular are to be congratulated.

After much deliberation, the final winners were:

Maths and Stats Stream
Gold Vanessa Rigby Manchester University Statistical inference for epidemics
Silver Helen Cumberland Sheffield University Medical statistics: survival analysis
Bronze Susanna Rogers Sheffield University Statistical approaches in the timing of animal extinctions
Non-maths and stats Stream
Silver Lam Chung (Stan) Yan Bangor Business School Political institutions and economic growth - an empirical investigation

We were honoured to have the Society Vice-President Sheila Bird to present the prizes although Stan was unfortunately not available to receive his and his tutor John Goddard deputised.
